Today off São Miguel Island we encountered a total of 5 different cetacean species.
We started the morning with common dolphins close to Ponta Delgada. Next we headed to an area where our lookout had seen sperm whales and we were lucky to come across a well known male who we call Mr Liable. He stayed at the surface for a long time and then showed us his magnificent tail as he went on a deep dive.
Just a bit further out we had both striped dolphins and Atlantic spotted dolphins in the same area. To the west of Ponta Delgada there was a group of bottlenose dolphins which our swimmers encountered underwater during the morning and afternoon tours. From our whale watching catamaran we also got to enjoy these bottlenose dolphins in the afternoon. They were socialising so we could see a fantastic display of jumps, as well as a newborn calf that was in the group.

In Pico Island we started the day with a bird you can sometimes find in the Lajes do Pico Lake, Numenius phaeopus. After that we went to find cetaceans and our lookout leaded us to a group of common dolphins with quite a lot of babies.
Then he guided us to encounter some sperm whales. We where able to see the tail of 4 females, a juvenile and 2 calves!
