3 species of dolphins in first trips of 2020

bottlenose dolphin jumping

Happy new year! Today we had our first trip of 2020 and it was filled with dolphins We had a beautiful sunny day with a bit of swell after the bad weather of last week. But that did not stop us from having an awesome trip!

In the morning we had a pod of common dolphins. They were in a large group but split up after a while and started foraging. This attracted a lot of seagulls! Then we went further east to find some bottlenose dolphins. They were diving a lot and it was quite difficult to see them.

In the afternoon we started off with the common dolphins again, and soon after that, we got a call from the other boat that they found Atlantics spotted dolphins! Could it be? This species is a migratory species and they generally leave the Azores around November, when the water temperature decreases. However, we had a decent sized pod today and they even had calves and lots of juveniles!

So that was the surprise of the day. Lastly, we managed to find bottlenose dolphins to end the day. On the way back we even saw a magical rainbow, so our 2020 is starting off great!
