Sperm whales, dolphins and sun in São Miguel Island

This morning felt truly
like a summer day! The sun was shining, the water was crystalline and had
intense shades of blue and of course, cetaceans were showing us their most
beautiful behaviours. We started the trip
with a group of sperm whales, we could count 7 different ones, they were calm,
showing their tails and heads from time to time, rolling their bodies.

After a while our
lookouts directed us towards a group of spotted dolphins. When we got there, we
could find a few individuals but they were quite elusive and spread out. That’s
why we decided to leave the area and go to find a different species.

After a short
navigation, approaching to the coast, right in front of Caloura, we found a big
group of common dolphins. They were constantly bowriding, making noises. The
water was so clear that it felt like being in the water with them.
It was also
a great opportunity for getting photos for Photo-ID: perfect lighting, perfect
positioning and lots of animals.

In the afternoon the
wind picked up a bit but everything was fine. We just left the
harbour and tumbled across a nice group of common dolphins.

After a short while we
followed the call of our other boat which heard the sperm whales thanks to the
hydrophone. We came to the area of Orca the Sperm whale female with
a calf which we already found in the morning socialising but in the afternoon
it looked like it was nursing the calf before it went for a deep sea dive
showing its fluke.

Then the calf started
to swim faster and showed us the direction of three more sperm whales and one
more fluked while the others went for shallow dives. One juvenile seemed to be
interested in one of our boats and approached it.

On our way back, we met
the same group of common dolphins again in front of the harbour still socialising,
whistling a lot and surfing the waves the boats created. This was the chance
for the RIB (zodiac boat) to turn back and enjoy the dolphins too.

The morning was
different for some other guests which went out with Mirone as they sighted as
well bottlenose dolphins and spotted dolphins.
