July 2018 sighting statistics in São Miguel Island

July was another great month for whale and
dolphin watching in São Miguel.

In total we encountered 11 different whale and
dolphin species (cetaceans).

We went out on the ocean every day of the month
and we encountered cetaceans during every tour that we went out. Our most
encountered species was the bottlenose dophin, followed by Atlantic spotted
dolphin, common dolphin and then the sperm whale.

We also had some sei whales
that were still migrating past and we also had some days with pilot whales,
false killer whales, striped dolphins, Risso’s dolphins and beaked whales.

As
for non-cetacean species, during the month we also registered loggerhead
turtles, a sicklefin devil ray, hammerhead sharks, plenty of flying fish and of
course a lot of seabirds, especially the emblemetic Cory’s shearwaters.

We hope
for continued great sightings during the month of August.
