This April we have encountered 9 different cetacean (whale and dolphin) species during our whale watching tours. April is a great month to come whale watching in the Azores because this is the time that the large baleen whales (like the blue whale, fin whale and sei whale) migrate past the Azores. Additionally, we can regularly see our resident species (namely the sperm whale, common dolphin, bottlenose dolphin and Risso’s dolphin) and several seasonal species that visit when the water is warming up. The above graph shows the sighting frequency (days sightings of all the days we went to sea) off all 9 species seen this month. Common names are shown below, listed in order of those most sighted to those least sighted in April:
- Common dolphin (Delphinus delphis)
- Bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus)
- Risso’s dolphin (Grampus griseus)
- Fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus)
- Sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus)
- Striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba)
- Blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus)
- Sei whale (Balaenoptera borealis)
- False killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens)
