May has been an incredible month for whale watching with Futurismo in São Miguel Island, Azores. This month we have seen 10 different whale and dolphin species and the statistics have been great. The most sighted species was the bottlenose dolphin, commonly known as “flipper”. The most sighted whale species was the sperm whale which is resident in the Azores. We have also seen several other whales, as this is the time of the year that the baleen whales migrate past the Azores. All species that have been sighted are listed below (species sighted most frequently are at the top) and their sighting frequencies (days sighted of all the days we went to sea) can be seen in the graph above:
- Bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus)
- Common dolphin (Delphinus delphis)
- Risso’s dolphin (Grampus griseus)
- Sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus)
- Fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus)
- Striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba)
- Pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus)
- Blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus)
- Sei whale (Balaenoptera borealis)
- Humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae)
