September 2012 sighting statistics

This past month the weather has allowed us to go to the sea on 24 of the 30 days of September. During these days we have encountered 8 different cetacean species (4 species of whale and 4 species of dolphin). As well as our regular sightings of resident species such as the sperm whale, common dolphin and bottlenose dolphin we also had surprise encounters with a blue whale and sei whale that were passing the area. 

  • Common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) – 88% sighting frequency
  • Bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) – 46% sighting frequency
  • Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis) – 42% sighting frequency
  • Striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba) – 13% sighting frequency
  • Beaked whale species (Mesoplodon sp.) – 4% sighting frequency
  • Sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) – 46% sighting frequency
  • Blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) – 4% sighting frequency
  • Sei whale (Balaenoptera borealis) – 4% sighting frequency
