\nWe’ve been having some misty days with high humidity, but that doesn’t dampen our spirits and it certainly hasn’t been stopping whales and dolphins from visiting us in S\u00e3o Miguel. Today we encountered a lot of different species. In the morning we had a sei whale<\/a> off the coast of Ponta Delgada, and also common dolphins<\/a> and bottlenose dolphins<\/a> nearby. After spending some time with these 3 species we went a bit further out where our lookout<\/a> had spotted sperm whales<\/a>, however they didn’t show up for us this time. In the afternoon we started with common dolphins and soon after received the exciting news that our lookout<\/a> had spotted a whale very close to Ponta Delgada, just outside of the marina where we depart from. How could we have missed it on our way out!? It was a fin whale<\/a>, the second largest animal in the world. The first and last time we encountered it at the surface between dives we got to see it close, especially the first time when it surfaced right near one of our rubber boats! The rest of the afternoon was spent in the company of more common dolphins<\/a>, plenty of seabirds and finally in the same area we spotted a loggerhead turtle <\/a>and a sicklefin devil ray<\/a>. What a beautiful summer’s day full of marine life right outside our base here in S\u00e3o Miguel!<\/div>\n
