\nToday was windy, but great nevertheless for dolphin and whale watching off S\u00e3o Miguel Island. In the morning we started with our resident whale species: the sperm whale<\/a>. There was a group out there, spread out and coming up for short periods to breathe at the choppy surface. From our catamaran we had a great look at 4 adults that were travelling together, surfacing high with their heads out of the water to breathe. After, from our catamaran we encountered a group of common dolphins<\/a>, while those from one of our smaller boats also saw bottlenose dolphins<\/a>. In the afternoon we started with the bottlenose dolphins close to the marina. It was the familiar group we refer to as “Bubblemaker’s group”, named after a dolphin we call “Bubblemaker” because of its bubble-blowing behaviour before surfacing. Other familiar individuals we spotted in the group were “Bubblefaker”, “Lady” and “Riscas”. Further out we encountered a big group of Atlantic spotted dolphins<\/a>, very active and all leaping together. It was the perfect end to the day, seeing the whole group leaping, babies and all.<\/div>\n
