{"id":925,"date":"2016-09-19T13:50:00","date_gmt":"2016-09-19T13:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/2016\/09\/19\/a-big-group-of-whales-close-to-ponta\/"},"modified":"2019-11-22T22:35:39","modified_gmt":"2019-11-22T22:35:39","slug":"a-big-group-of-whales-close-to-ponta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/a-big-group-of-whales-close-to-ponta\/","title":{"rendered":"A big group of whales close to Ponta Delgada"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" trbidi=\"on\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nThis morning there was a group of <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/sperm-whale.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sperm whales<\/a> very close to Ponta Delgada, where we depart from. We didn&#8217;t have to travel far out from the marina, to an area where the water was less than 400 metres deep, which is considered shallow for a sperm whale, as it is a deep-diving species. At first the whales were going on shallow dives, not lifting up their tails. But with a bit of patience one tail was seen from aboard our zodiac boat and three from our catamaran. The group was big, with at least 10 different sperm whales spread out across a large area. At one point we got to see at least 6 whales together at the surface! Closer to land there was a friendly group of <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/common-dolphin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">common dolphins<\/a>.
