June has been great so far; in the nine days that we<br \/>\nwent out we have seen already nine different species of cetaceans. <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nAt this time of the year<br \/>\nthe chance to see a variety of different species is high, the baleen whales are<br \/>\nstill passing by while they are migrating to the North and the seasonal species<br \/>\nare starting to arrive to the Azores to spend the summer. <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nIn the morning tour we<br \/>\nsaw <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/sperm-whale.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sperm whales<\/a>, which is the largest animal in the world with teeth. We found<br \/>\nfour adults who were logging at the surface and we could even see the tail from<br \/>\ntwo of them!<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nThe list of the<br \/>\ndolphins seen from the different boats in the morning is long, we saw two of<br \/>\nthe resident species: <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/common-dolphin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">common<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/bottlenose-dolphin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bottlenose dolphins<\/a> and two seasonal species:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/atlantic-spotted-dolphin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">spotted<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/striped-dolphin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">striped <\/a>dolphins.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nIn the afternoon tour,<br \/>\nwe added two more species to the list. These two species of whales have different<br \/>\nrecords; the <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/fin-whale.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fin whale<\/a> is the second largest animal in the world (growing up to<br \/>\n27 meters) and the <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/humpback-whale.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">humpback whale<\/a> is the whale with the largest pectoral fins<br \/>\n(up to 5 meters in length). <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nOur catamaran Quatro<br \/>\nVentos was really lucky to find the humpback whale very close to the shore (in<br \/>\nan area just 60 metres deep). We could see the tail many times, that allowed us<br \/>\nto take pictures for photo identification. We have fantastic news, we found a match<br \/>\nto a whale that we saw today, it was seen 27 days ago in Cape Verde! Another comparison later confirmed that this same humpback whale was also seen in Norway in 2014.
