{"id":64224,"date":"2021-07-22T11:16:10","date_gmt":"2021-07-22T12:16:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/?p=64224"},"modified":"2021-07-22T11:22:26","modified_gmt":"2021-07-22T12:22:26","slug":"sylvia-earle-says-that-the-azores-are-a-hope-spot-for-the-oceans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/sylvia-earle-says-that-the-azores-are-a-hope-spot-for-the-oceans\/","title":{"rendered":"Sylvia Earle says that the Azores are a hope spot for the oceans"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The non-profit organization <a href=\"https:\/\/mission-blue.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mission Blue<\/a>, owned by world-renowned marine biologist <strong>Sylvia Earle<\/strong>, has classified the <a href=\"https:\/\/mission-blue.org\/2021\/07\/the-azores-archipelago-hope-spot-a-model-of-ecotourism-and-conservation-leadership-2\/?fbclid=IwAR0ZtHGw6fC6EkA2Hze-FEMxkniwU7sS4r_BQLaBmqjkZIQDIkx9MvMQqIU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Azores Archipelago as a hope spot<\/a> in support of a network of marine protected areas that stretch from the sea surface to the depths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a press release from the Mission Blue Foundation, it is mentioned that <strong><em>hope spots<\/em><\/strong> are essential areas for the health of the oceans and, with this classification, it is intended to spread the importance of the Azores archipelago as a habitat for several marine species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Azores archipelago thus became part of the network of hope spots in July 2019, and two years later, this July, our islands <strong>had the privilege of receiving Sylvia Earle<\/strong>, founder of Mission Blue, who was delighted with the islands to promote actions to explore and protect the oceans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sylvia Earle said &#8220;<strong>the Azores Archipelago is a magnet for life. It really is a magical place<\/strong>.\u201d She continues, \u201c<strong>Launching the Azores as Hope Spot is so logical \u2013 just ask the whales<\/strong>. They know how special this place is. Which for us was a very special moment of <strong>recognition of our work with more than 30 years of experience<\/strong> in the protection of marine species that live and pass through the Azores. Thus recognizing our experience in scientific research and nature conservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sylvia Earle is a recognized marine biologist and resident explorer for the National Geographic Society.
