\n <\/span>Now that
\n2017 is over, it’s time for us to think about what happened in this year and of
\ncourse to continue studing and learning about this beautifull animals we are
\npationated with, 2017 has been a very interesting year for us in whale and
\ndolphin watching off S\u00e3o Miguel:<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\nA total of 16 different species were encountered
\nthis year. The most frequently sighted as usual have been our resident
\ndolphin species, common and bottlenose dolphins, this is a tendency that we see
\nevery year with this species as there are some families that are living around
\nour island. Our other resident species, the Risso’s dolphin are always less
\nsighted here in S\u00e3o Miguel, but in this year this species was seen every month,
\nat least once.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\nThis has been a very good year of sighting of our
\nresident whale, the sperm whale as we can see in the image below; this is a
\nwhale species that may be encounter all along the year but is clearly more
\nencountered in early summer, during the summer and in the late summer, but
\npresent all along the year.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\nAtlantic spotted dolphins have been a
\nsurprise this year as they have stayed with us for a very long time this year,
\nthey started appearing in the month of June, giving a very good welcome to the
\nsummer and they stayed up to December; not only that they have been very
\nencountered, but the encounters with these ones have been great: very big
\ngroups of them full of babies. Our swimming with dolphins\u2019 activities were very
\nsuccessfully with this species this year, not only because of the big size of
\nthe groups, but also because of their especially curious behaviour of this year
\n\ud83d\ude09<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\n F<\/u><\/span>in whale<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/u> was also a species sighted significantly, mainly
\nduring our spring months but also summer and autumn. This whale species it is
\nnot considered resident of the Azores, but even though it is true that these
\nwhales are seen in spring and summer time during their migrations, for the last
\nyears this species have been seen (not very often) around of our island even in
\nwinter time, so who knows… We certainly need more studies <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\nOut of the baleen whales that are found in the
\nAzores, three species have had a different behaviour compared to previous
\nyears:<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\n-The big surprise were the Bryde’s whales, since
\n2013 and before that 2009 that we didn’t see them, this year we had some
\nseveral individuals, including a calf.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\n-Blue whales this year were very abundant if
\ncompared with other years<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\n-Sei whales were also kind of a surprise as they
\nare usually sighted in spring summer time, but this 2017 appeared with a great
\nabundance in September, October, November and even in December!<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\nWe never know what we will see so we can expect a
\nsurprise at any time of the year from any species. As well as whales and
\ndolphins we have also registered many sightings of turtles, <\/span>ocean sunfish<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>manta rays<\/span><\/a>, sharks, <\/span>tuna<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>swordfish<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>flying fish<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>jellyfish<\/span><\/a> and several species of seabirds. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
