At the <\/span><a style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.europeancetaceansociety.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">32nd conference of the European Cetacean Society<\/a><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\"> and where Futurismo was present.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit; text-align: justify;\">This year\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\">topic at the conference was the importance of partnerships for marine <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\">conservation, with the title \u2018forging strategic partnerships for marine <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\">conservation.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">Example:<br \/>\nMediterranean countries\u2019 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\">They <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\">announced the first large-scale cooperation study in the Mediterranean in order <\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;\">to study the cetaceans in the whole sea; for this project that is called <\/span><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\" style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\">Accobams <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\">all the Mediterranean countries are participating including all continents; <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\">researchers, scientists, private sectors and government are involved in this <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\">huge project which is a really big victory for cetacean science.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">The conference was divided into differents topics (Habitat and distribution, Density and abundance, Management and conservation, Behaviour and ecology, Health and medicine, New tecniques, Acoustics and noise and Strandings) and included different presentations: short talks, talks and posters. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\">conference started with the topic of habitat distribution and finished with <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\">strandings.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"color: black; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-themecolor: text1;\">During the habitat distribution talks the<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp;<\/span>Azores were named many times, as an important<br \/>\narea (Mid-Atlantic Ridge) of connection<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>feeding and breeding<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>grounds for <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/fin-whale.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fin<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/sei-whale.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sei<\/a> and<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/01\/blue-whale.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blue whales<\/a>, the main baleen whale species that we sight during our whale watching tours, some studies show that this place is vital for these whale species connecting <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp;<\/span>these two grounds; in the Azores they will find a place to rest and feed in the middle of their giant migration.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"color: black; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-themecolor: text1;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">A study about short-finned pilot whales in the Macaronesia area was also presented. They talked about the short-finned pilot whales that move along the Macaronesia area (Azores, Madeira, Canary) in which some of futurismo\u2019s data was used. A poster was also made about the subject.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"color: black; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-themecolor: text1;\">On the last day <\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;\">the Azores was named again in a project <\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">about the use of opportunistic data (from whale watching) to create some models for <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/sperm-whale.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sperm whales<\/a> and the possible use of them<br \/>\nfor management.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'times new roman' , serif; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-font-style: italic; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-fareast-language: ES-TRAD;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/1-767x1024.jpg\"><img src=\"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/1-767x1024.jpg\" width=\"478\" height=\"640\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1600\" data-original-width=\"1200\"><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">Some conferences were focused on deep feeders such as the beaked whales and sperm<br \/>\nwhales both in the Atlantic and in the Mediterranean sea, with some very interesting results.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">Some of the conferences also touched on the subject of whale watching approaches; especially<br \/>\nin developing countries where some studies are being carried out about the response of the animals to different vessel approaches; the conclusions were pretty much the ones we have already been applying in our company for a long time (key factors for a responsible whale watching are speed and angle of approaching the animals) and the result were mainly that the regulations are good in general but there is a big lack of control;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">for example, feeding the animals in order to attract them has shown a very negative effect for <\/span><a style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\" href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/bottlenose-dolphin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bottlenose dolphins<\/a><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">. The key to deal with these animals and not disturb their natural development is to keep them wild.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">In conservation the talks were very interesting, some focused on projects as the one in Greece with the endangered Monk seal, who\u2019s biggest threat over there is the fishermen, so it is vital to show that marine protected areas benefit everyone, including humans, as they allow fish populations to recover, providing more fish for everybody. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\">The short talks <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\">where very interesting and were mainly for the presentation of the different <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\">conservation projects around the world (seals, tracks of <\/span><a style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/minke-whale.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">minke whales<\/a><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\">\u2026)<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">We had a video night with many videos about different topics, the emphasis of these movies<br \/>\nwas in marine conservation, some NGO\u2019s and the star of the movies was\u2026 plastic.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">Plastic was a very strong subject, not only on the video night but also in the conservation<br \/>\ntalks and short talks. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">Both macro and micro plastic (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1qT-rOXB6NI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">plastic doesn\u2019t decompose<\/a> it only breaks into smaller and smaller pieces that get smaller and smaller until they are microscopic) are becoming a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YFZS3Vh4lfI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">very big issue<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">Did you know that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6zrn4-FfbXw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">every year of 8 million tones of plastic<\/a> is entering the world\u2019s oceans, and growing year after year; this has called the attention of many scientists as this problem is growing in a massive way. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\">Big pieces <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\">of plastic are entangling the animals (not only cetaceans but many many marine <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\">animals).<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">There was talk about some researchers that are studying the dangers of micro plastic in filter feeding species, such as the baleen whales spend their life filtering tones and tones of sea water and why is it so potentially dangerous?<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">Micro plastic can carry many organic contaminants \u2018stuck&nbsp; on\u2019 their surface and filter feeding animals can absorb and accumulate these contaminants, this is what we call sub lethal<br \/>\ncontamination.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/2-1024x768.jpg\"><img src=\"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/2-1024x768.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1200\" data-original-width=\"1600\"><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">In conservation they also showed ways to determine MPA (marine protected areas) based on breeding and nursing grounds for females and calves along the Atlantic shores.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">A bit of morality related to the cetaceans, as their welfare and a very hard and difficult topic, how do we describe a sentient animal, where do we draw the line; it was interesting to hear about point of view related to marine mammals that were a bit less scientific.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">One very touching and sad moment in the conference was when they talked about the Vaquita. The vaquita is a porpoise that is really at the verge of extinction; they live in the gulf of California and they are almost extinct because they keep getting trapped in the illegal nets that the fisherman &nbsp;put out to capture totoaba fish, a fish that is used in Chinese medicine. The Vaquita<br \/>\nproject (<\/span><span lang=\"ES-TRAD\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vaquitacpr.org\/\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">www.vaquitacpr.org<\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">) is trying to save this porpoise from extinction but, it is very difficult, as less than 30 individuals remain.<br \/>\nThe population is very fragile, they have tried to remove the fishing nets but despite a big effort that englobes even the Mexican army they keep appearing as the totoaba fish tried to relocate the Vaquitas, but they are very fragile animals. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\">In this presentation many people spoke and Sea Shepherd was involved, but sadly it felt <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\">more like a funeral for this species\u2026<\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/3-1024x768.jpg\"><img src=\"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/3-1024x768.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1200\" data-original-width=\"1600\"><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\">medicine\u2026 &nbsp;More things than we can even <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\">write about.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">The poster sessions occurred every day according to different subjects, three of the&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">biologist from Futurismo: Marina Gardoki, Biagio Vilovi and V\u00edctor Ojeda presented our <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2018\/04\/futurismo-takes-part-on-32-nd-european.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">scientific posters<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">These posters show some of the studies that we are carrying out using the data we collect during our tours.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">On the first day of the congress it was Marina and Biagio\u2019s turn to show their posters presenting respectively a study about a male sperm whale that is living year-round in our waters, and an assessment of migration behaviour and first photo-ID catalogue of fin whales in Pico.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Conferenceitaly-1024x576.png\"><img src=\"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Conferenceitaly-1024x576.png\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"900\" data-original-width=\"1600\"><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\">show his poster where focused on analysing the temporal distribution of fin and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify; font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: inherit;\">sei whales that we sight in S\u00e3o Miguel Island.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em;
