We left Ponta Delgada’s marina with one of
our zodiacs.

It didn’t take too long for one of our lookouts to find a group of common dolphins. They were curious with our boat, approaching constantly and showing us their beautiful coloration. The lookout also spotted a bigger animal in the area, but the sighting was fast and unexpected and we couldn’t find the animal again.

We went further out, with the hope of finding sperm
whales. We tried using our hydrophone twice but still no luck. After reaching 9
miles from the coast we started heading back.

The return was very interesting! Another bigger and spread out group of common dolphins, squid fishermen showing us their catch and the same dead sperm whale that we found yesterday. We even saw a Cory’s Shearwater!

We came back with a clear idea that the ocean is an interconnected ecosystem. When an animal dies a new life arises. The role that we have in it is also key for its sustainability.

Today the world celebrates the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, which aims to celebrate the achievements of women in this area and encourage younger generations to think about their professional path in the area of science. The day was initiated by the UN and this year’s theme is “Investment in Women and Science for Sustainable Growth”.

<figure class="wp-block-gallery columns-3
