Several days ago we found one
\nAtlantic spotted dolphin near the coastline of Pico Island with white spots
\nthat caught our attention.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n
\nThis is most likely one individual
\nthat suffers from Piebaldism, one disease associated with individuals
\nbeing more white than usual, a real similar phenomenon to Albinism. As you may
\nknow, this is a condition found on humans or animals that show really white
\nskin and red eyes. Cetaceans are different from human beings and that is why in this
\nparticular, Atlantic spotted dolphin, we can see several white marks and
\nreally dark ones as well (contrasts between dark and white marks), this is why
\nwe think this might be Piebaldism.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nUnfortunately, we cannot collect
\ngenetic material from this dolphin, and that is also the reason we cannot
\nknow for sure the specific condition. Other cetacean species have been
\ndescribed as abnormally white for example Orcas or Humpback whales. Also, who
\nknows if the famous story about “Moby-Dick” written by HermanMelville<\/a> <\/span>is also based on an abnormally
\nwhite individual? <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

\nIn the Azores the first sighting of
\nan abnormal white cetacean was in 1997 by Roland Seitre, also one Atlantic
\nspotted dolphin, and some other sightings have been registered on the past
\ndecade. These events lead our marine biologist Rui Santos to publish one article
\nwith the title “Anomalously White Atlantic Spotted Dolphins (Stenella
\nfrontalis, Cuvier, 1892) Off <\/span><\/span>the Azores”. It was published
\nin 2016 in the  “Aquatic Mammals\u201d
\njournal from the (EAAM) – The European Association for Aquatic Mammals and you
