{"id":38,"date":"2019-10-14T18:28:00","date_gmt":"2019-10-14T18:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/2019\/10\/14\/baleen-whales-in-october\/"},"modified":"2019-11-22T22:40:19","modified_gmt":"2019-11-22T22:40:19","slug":"baleen-whales-in-october","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/baleen-whales-in-october\/","title":{"rendered":"Baleen whales in October?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">After a weekend not being able to go to the sea, the weather conditions gave us a break and today we were able to go out again.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">We started the morning trip headed to an area where our lookouts observed a blow, but not a common blow in this time of the year since it was a baleen blow! How do we recognize a baleen blow? Because baleen whales have two blow holes on the top of the head so their blows are bigger and higher than of a sperm whale, which is a toothed whale and only has one blow hole. So when we arrived to this area we could see it was a Sei whale, the third biggest whale on the world!&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Then we went to another area but just 1 mile further when our lookouts spotted this time a sperm whale, but one well known by everybody\u2026Mr Liable!&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/3-7.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"606\" data-original-width=\"900\" height=\"430\" src=\"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/3-7.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/4-6.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"615\" data-original-width=\"900\" height=\"436\" src=\"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/4-6.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/5-6.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"622\" data-original-width=\"900\" height=\"442\" src=\"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/5-6.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">A 17 meters male which is sighted regularly on S\u00e3o Miguel. In the way to our second area we observed some Atlantic spotted dolphins, but we didn\u2019t stop because we needed to arrive to the sperm whale area so we could catch him before he dived for 45 minutes. So after Mr Liable showed his magnificent tail we went to see the dolphins. The water temperature is still warm enough for the Atlantic spotted dolphins to be here in the Azores so let\u2019s enjoy them while they\u2019re close to us.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2spotted.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"523\" data-original-width=\"900\" height=\"370\" src=\"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2spotted.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/6-6.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"551\" data-original-width=\"900\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/6-6.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">And the afternoon started with bottlenose dolphins!&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/7bottle.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"515\" data-original-width=\"900\" height=\"366\" src=\"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/7bottle.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Spread out over a large area, but beautiful to see, with plenty of scars! As from land they were not seeing any whale for a while, our boats went searching for them on different directions. We tried our hydrophone, but no sound around. Whales, if there, were silent!&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">One of our lookouts saw from land a sperm whale breaching, but for the boats&#8230; Nothing. And suddenly, while looking for a supposed sei whale&#8230;a humpback whale! And in October? Not common at all!
