<\/a>The <\/span>sowerby’s<\/span> beaked whale was the
\nfirst of the beaked whales<\/a> to be discovered from an individual <\/span><\/span>stranded in the year
\nof <\/span>1800.  It is one of the most commonly stranded
\nspecies of beaked whale, and have one of the most northerly distributions.
\nAlthough they appear to be relatively common around the Azores, they are not
\noften seen on the surface. This is often the case with members of the beaked whale family<\/a> that spend very little time on the surface and avoid boats. <\/span>
\n
\n<\/span><\/span>
\nThe <\/span>sowerby’s<\/span> beaked whale may be
\nidentified <\/span>from the <\/span>shape of its head and
\nits long slender beak which it brings out of the water upon surfacing, and as other Mesoplodons<\/a><\/i> they don’t have the middle notch on the fluke. However,
\nidentification is difficult and is often only possibly if the individual is
\nstranded. When stranded they make a sound similar to that of a cow mooing. <\/span><\/span>Sowerby’s<\/span> beaked whales are
\nusually seen in very small groups of fewer than 10 individuals. As with other beaked whales<\/a>, little is known about their <\/span>behaviour<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
