The chest and belly are white (with a distinctive black bib) and the\u00a0black beak is short and wedge-shaped. In the non breeding season they are dull in\u00a0colour, but during the\u00a0breeding season the lighter plumage on their back becomes orange. In flight\u00a0they have distinctive white wing stripes and black on the trailing edge of the\u00a0wings. The Ruddy turnstone is a highly migratory bird that is found throughout\u00a0northern Eurasia as well as North and South America. In the winter they spread\u00a0to coastlines of almost the entire world. They are present on all islands of\u00a0the Azores throughout the year and are mostly observed on pebble beaches\u00a0coastal lagoons. In the winter we often see them in the marina Here they are\u00a0usually seen running busily over the rocks, making them very difficult to\u00a0photograph.\u00a0This species is classified as a &#8220;common vagrant&#8221; in the Azores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Length:<\/strong> 21 &#8211; 26 cm<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Weight:<\/strong> 84 &#8211; 190 g<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wingspan:<\/strong> 50 &#8211; 57 cm<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Population:<\/strong> c.460,000 &#8211; 800,000<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Longevity:<\/strong> 19.7 years (maximum)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Diet:<\/strong> Crustaceans, molluscs, worms<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Breeding age:<\/strong> 2 &#8211; 4 years<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Eggs: <\/strong>2 &#8211; 5 (average 4)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Incubation:<\/strong> 21 &#8211; 24 days<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nesting sites:<\/strong> On the ground in small
