In the Azores, storm petrels are classified as “rare vagrants” and the Monteiro’s storm petrel is classified as being “rare breeding”. The Monteiro’s storm petrel (Oceanodrama monteiroi) is endemic to the Azores and nests (from May to early December) only on the islet of Praia, in Graciosa. The population has been reduced to just 250-300 breeding pairs. They are able to reproduce from two years on and the females produce just one egg each time. The egg is laid between late April until early July. The parents take care of the single chick for two months, with both parents participating in incubation and vigilance. The newborns leave the nest between mid-August and early October. During the day they catch small fish and squid. At night, they eat mesopelagic organisms that make nocturnal migrations to the surface.

Monteiro’s storm petrel (Oceanodrama monteiroi) facts

Length: 19 – 21 cm

Weight: 35 – 60 g

Wingspan: 43 – 51 cm

Population: 250 – 300 pairs

Main threats: Introduced mammals (rats, cats, ferrets) and birds of prey

Diet:
• Day: Fish and squid
• Night: Mesopelagic organisms

Breeding age: 2 years

Eggs: 1

Incubation: 45 days

In other languages
Portuguese: Paínho Monteiro
Spanish: Paiño Monteiro
French: Océanite de Monteiro
Italian: Tempeste o petrelli Monteiro
German: Monteiro sturmschwalb
Dutch: Monteiro stormvogeltje
Swedish: Monteiros stormsvala
Norwegian: Stornsvale, art utan norsk namn (Monteiros stormsvale?)
Danish: Monteiros stormsvale
Finnish: Monteiro ulappakeiju

Oceanodrama spp. | Storm petrels In the Azores it is possible to see five species of storm petrel (Wilson’s…

[313
277,79
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v16.2 -
