It is listed as <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Endangered<br \/>\n<\/span>in the Azores, with<br \/>\nonly about 50 couples nesting only in Santa Maria, on the islet of Vila<br \/>\n(although several birds have been caught in Graciosa Island). In the past this species was subjected to<br \/>\nintense human pressure through hunting, destruction of their nesting habitats<br \/>\nand predation by exotic mammals (especially cats, and rats). It is a highly pelagic bird,<br \/>\ncoming to land only during breeding season which is usually from May to October. When in flight Bulwer\u2019s petrels are silent,<br \/>\nbut when they are at their nesting sites they emit a very characteristic sound<br \/>\nknown as a &#8220;woof\u201c. On the breeding grounds their behaviour is nocturnal and<br \/>\ncolonial.
