This species has a slender body form, a long snout, long and curved pectoral fins and dorsal fin that is set far back, being closer to the pelvic fin. The tail fin is asymmetrical, with the upper lobe being longer than the bottom lobe. Blue sharks have big eyes that are protected by inner eyelids that close in case of danger, as in others species from the Carcharhinidae family. This species can be found all around the world, mostly in open water, in tropical and temperate regions (in waters of 7 to 21º C ). They are viviparous, reaching maturity after 4 to 5 years of age (with a length of about 2.5 m). Gestation lasts almost one year ( 9 to 12 months). In Portugal this species is a target for sport fishing and is also caught as bycatch (30% of all fish fished by fishing fleets is blue shark).

Length:
Adult: 1,7 –
