We went South of Faial Island &#8211; our \u2018sister island\u2019 &#8211; to try to see a <a href=\"https:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.com\/2007\/07\/sperm-whale.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sperm whale<\/a> the lookouts had sighted. Although the sea was with high and long waves, we were still able to spot its blow from far away.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: &quot;arial&quot; , &quot;helvetica&quot; , sans-serif;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Sanstitre-1.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"600\" data-original-width=\"900\" height=\"426\" src=\"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Sanstitre-1.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: &quot;arial&quot; , &quot;helvetica&quot; , sans-serif;\">Sperm whale\u2019s blows are quite different from the ones of baleen whales. As they have the blowhole turned forward at the left side of their heads their expiration blows stay almost horizontally relative to the water\u2019s surface.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: &quot;arial&quot; , &quot;helvetica&quot; , sans-serif;\">On these days of high waves, we sometimes struggle to spot the blow from the boat\u2026 but this one was quite easy to see! The individual was large, and its blow was great and high.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: &quot;arial&quot; , &quot;helvetica&quot; , sans-serif;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: &quot;arial&quot; , &quot;helvetica&quot; , sans-serif;\">While the whale was resting at surface in between its deep dives we were observing it and after it dived, we stayed and heard its echolocation clicks as it was going deeper and deeper, into the darkness underneath us! As it arched its back to engage in the deep dive, it showed us the tail.
