Today is the International Day for <\/span>Biodiversity<\/a> and here in the Azores
\narchipelago, we are in one of the best places to celebrate this day because we
\nhave a huge range of wildlife. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\nDuring the Springtime especially the ocean is
\nteeming with life, ranging from the small plankton all the way up to the great
\nwhales. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\n
<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\nDuring today’s tours, we saw a variety of different types of animals,
\nstarting with our resident common dolphins<\/a> in the morning and later going to
\nsome sperm whales<\/a> to finish the morning tour. <\/span><\/span>

\nWe also had a lot of seabirds around (Cory’s shearwaters<\/a>, common terns<\/a> and yellow-legged gulls<\/a>), some of us saw a loggerhead turtle and we could also see a lot of Portuguese man-o-war<\/a> which is very typical for this time of the year when we have a lot of nutrients and plankton in our waters.<\/span><\/div>\n

\nDuring the afternoon, the list of sighted species became even bigger! We
\nstarted our trip with a baleen whale<\/a>, a Sei whale<\/a>, swimming fast but calm along
\nour boat. We had many chances to appreciate the details of the animal and we
\neven saw the whale surfing the wave with its head sticking out of the water! <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

\nWe
\ncontinued our trip and arrived to an area of sperm whales with a lot of clues
\nindicating the presence of these animals like pieces of fresh squid, and soon
\nenough we spotted the blow of the sperm whales which were being stalked by the
\ncommon dolphins. One of the sperm whales was a juvenile and tried to use the
\nboat to distract the dolphins as it went for a dive. <\/span><\/span>

\nThe sperm whale group was one that we know well from previous encounters
\nover the years, both off S\u00e3o Miguel and Pico islands. It is a group with at
\nleast 6 adult whales, and today we also saw a juvenile and a smaller calf. One
\nof the individuals whose tail we photographed is one that is known in our S\u00e3o
\nMiguel catalogue as “Penakabe” and is an individual that was named by
\nour guest Doris Thomas who was with us just last week as well as in many
\nearlier years.<\/span><\/span>

A Sooty shearwater<\/a> was
\nseen after the whales adding one more species to the biodiversity day! What a
\nlovely afternoon in S\u00e3o Miguel waters, wishing everyday would be like this one!<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
