In the morning we encountered the two smaller dolphin species and they gave us show full of jumping and bowriding. In the afternoon we encountered a group of orcas, the same ones that were around yesterday. We instantly recognised the male, an individual that we encountered first in January and re-appeared yesterday and this afternoon. This time he was seen with one female and two younger juvenile orcas. Like yesterday the orcas were very curious towards our catamaran “Cetus” and dived around and under our boat many times. At one time we got to see a spectacular performance from the male – he breached (jumped out of the water) several times and also slapped his tail and pectoral fins on the surface of the water.

Another unusual sighting this morning was two double-crested cormorants on Vila Franca Islet. This is a bird species that we do not see often here in the Azores.
