We were so lucky to see them socializing. They were turning where<br \/>\nwe could see their fluke raise out of the water from the side, and we saw them<br \/>\nspy hopping as well. Spy hopping is when the sperm whale lifts its head,<br \/>\nvertically, out of the water, having a look at what is happening at the<br \/>\nsurface. Wow, we could see 4 sperm whales really close, and underwater! Then, for<br \/>\nthe grand finale, they decided to go for a deep dive and fluked (showed their<br \/>\ntail) right next to the boat! Some of our boats started off<br \/>\nseeing the <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: &quot;arial&quot; , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: &quot;arial&quot; , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.com\/2007\/07\/pilot-whale-spp.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pilot whales<\/a> <\/span>first, which are always a nice surprise! We do not see<br \/>\nthese species every day. The pilot whales were diving a long time, but when<br \/>\nthey were at the surface, we could see them really well. Miranda van der Linde identified this unit of sperm<br \/>\nwhales as the <a href=\"https:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.com\/2016\/10\/sperm-whales-dont-let-us-down.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">most sighted group of sperm whales<\/a> around S\u00e3o Miguel, the red<br \/>\nunit. Some of the flukers we recognised as Bear Paw and Left tip. Orca (name of<br \/>\na sperm whale) and Diamond were accompanied by calves.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: &quot;arial&quot; , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;\"><img border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"600\" data-original-width=\"900\" height=\"426\" src=\"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/spermwhale6-1.png\" width=\"640\" \/> <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: &quot;arial&quot; , sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;\">Additionally, on one of<br \/>\nthe boats, we listened to their clicks using the hydrophone, and it was quite<br \/>\nclear. In the afternoon these sperm whales were foraging, as we heard their<br \/>\nforaging clicks!
