{"id":1511,"date":"2014-07-10T17:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-07-10T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/2014\/07\/10\/sperm-whales-dolphins-sunfish-and\/"},"modified":"2019-11-22T22:32:11","modified_gmt":"2019-11-22T22:32:11","slug":"sperm-whales-dolphins-sunfish-and","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/sperm-whales-dolphins-sunfish-and\/","title":{"rendered":"Sperm whales, dolphins, a sunfish and a leatherback turtle"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" trbidi=\"on\">\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<span lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">In the morning, three of our zodiacs<br \/>\nleft the marina and after only a few minutes we saw our first group of cetaceans: the<br \/>\nresident <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/common-dolphin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">common dolphins<\/a>. They were playful and social towards our boats, jumping<br \/>\nand bowriding next to us. After that, we switched groups and dolphin species. Our&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/vigias-onshore-lookouts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vigia<\/a> told us to travel more to the south and afterwards, we<br \/>\nencountered&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/bottlenose-dolphin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bottlenose dolphins<\/a>.<br \/>\nThey were about 15 individuals, spread out in the area, feeding and socialising<br \/>\naround our zodiacs. Meanwhile, between the boats we saw a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/sunfish-fact-sheet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sunfish<\/a>, the<br \/>\nlargest bony fish in the world. Then, we left the area going to the south to<br \/>\ntry to find whales. One of our zodiacs, saw two blows one mile out. We get the<br \/>\narea but they never appeared again. They were baleen whales, but we don\u00b4t know<br \/>\nsure if they were <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/fin-whale.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fin whales<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/sei-whale.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sei whales<\/a>. The people on our <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2013\/07\/whale-watching-and-snorkelling-in.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Full day tour<\/a> were more lucky as they encountered some sperm whales more to the East of S\u00e3o Miguel Island. Upon returning to Ponta Delgada, we<br \/>\nsaw a group of <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/rissos-dolphin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Risso\u00b4s dolphins<\/a>, more curious than normal, approaching very<br \/>\nclose to the boat.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nIn the afternoon we went out with two boats. We started with common dolphins again, after them we found a playful group of bottlenose dolphins in the area where our lookout had seen a <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/sperm-whale.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sperm whale<\/a> diving. We waited around the area for the sperm whale while we were enjoying the bottlenose dolphins surfing the waves.
