\nJune was a
\ngreat month for whale and dolphin watching in S\u00e3o Miguel Island.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn total,
\nwe encountered 11 different species of cetaceans.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
\n
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n
\n<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\nWe went out
\non 27 days of the month and we encountered cetaceans during every tour. <\/span><\/span><\/span>
\n
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>
\nOur
\nmost sighted species was the <\/span>common dolphin<\/a><\/span>,
\nfollowed by the <\/span>bottlenose dolphin<\/a><\/span>,
\nand then the <\/span>sperm whale<\/a><\/span>.
\nThese three species are resident here in S\u00e3o Miguel and for this reason, we are
\nlucky to see this species during many of our tours.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
\n
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nWe still
\nmanaged to encounter some baleen whales, mostly <\/span>sei whale<\/a><\/span>
\nbut we were also able to meet <\/span>minke whale<\/a> 3 days and on one day a <\/span>fin whale<\/a>. <\/span><\/span><\/span>
\n
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>
\nOther dolphin species we observed were <\/span>striped
\ndolphins<\/a> and <\/span>Risso\u2019s dolphins<\/a><\/span>
\nfollowed by <\/span>short-finned pilot whales<\/a><\/span>
\nand then <\/span>Atlantic spotted dolphins<\/a><\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/span>
\n
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>
\nTo be in presence of <\/span>Sowerby\u2019s
\nbeaked whales<\/a> it is always
\nsomething special as it is quite rare to be at the same moment at the same
\nplace as them.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe North
\nAtlantic Ocean is not just habitat of the well-appreciated cetaceans but also
\nof <\/span>Loggerhead
\nturtles<\/a>, Leatherback
\nturtle<\/a>, Velella<\/a>,
\nMauve
\nstinger<\/a>, Sunfish<\/a>,
\nHammerhead
\nsharks<\/a>, Blue
\nsharks<\/a>, Blue
\nMarlin<\/a>, Triggerfish, plenty of <\/span>Flying
\nfish<\/a> and Portuguese
\nMan-o-war<\/a> that we could watch in
\nJune in the water. <\/span><\/span><\/span>
\n
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>
\nIn the air, we faced <\/span>Cory\u2019s
\nshearwaters<\/a>, Great
\nshearwaters<\/a>, Bulwer\u2019s
\nPetrels<\/a>, Sooty
\nshearwater<\/a>, Common
\nterns<\/a>, Yellow-legged
\nseagulls<\/a>, Great
\nskua<\/a>, Rock pigeon and even the
\nuncommon sight of a Trinidad petrel.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
