We started the tour with dolphins, also close to the shore, a friendly group of bottlenose dolphins, maybe looking for some shrimps to eat along the rocks. Every time they came back from a dive they stuck their heads out of the water to have a look at us. We also had a boat out there swimming with dolphins and they had a great time. Then we got the news that one of our skippers saw the blow from a blue whale and we went to see them. The largest animal in the world and very endangered. At one point they went diving and later came up close to our front and surprised us. Not only dolphins are curious – whales are too!

Later in the office we analysed our ID photos we took of these blue whales and from this work we could identify one of them as a whale we saw last year on April 26th and April 27th. The other blue whale we saw this morning was one we had not see earlier off São Miguel Island, so we added it as a new individual to our catalogue – blue whale number 95!

As well as cetaceans some of our clients on of of this morning’s boats also spotted loggerhead turtles, a sunfish and flying fish.

In the afternoon our lookout spotted bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins and striped dolphins. However the whale watchers out on the boat only ended up encountering the bottlenose dolphins. That is nature, every tour is very different.

The powerful blow of a big blue whale!

Watching the blue whales from the bow of our catamaran

Blue whale dorsal with Ponta Delgada and a cruise ship (which some of our clients came from) in the background

Watching bottlenose dolphins bowriding

Today we had two blue whales close to the coastline.
