It started out with 3 different types of dolphins, one after the other. First we had a nice encounter with a group of about 20 common dolphins, then about the same number of bottlenose dolphins (one of them was a tiny baby that deligthed everybody aboard) and then a group of about 40 Atlantic spotted dolphins. We are finally starting to see the large and playful groups of spotted dolphins that are typical of the summer time. Next we went a bit further out to try to see a whale that our lookout had spotted. The smaller boats were in the area first and had to be quite patient before seeing anything. As soon as our catamaran arrived the whale surfaced. To our surprise it was a large fin whale! This is very late in the year to see them, as they usually pass by the Azores in the spring time. Every time we see another fin whale we are pleasantly surprised. This particular whale became quite curious and at one time passed inbetween two of our boats.

In the afternoon we started with another nice large group of Atlantic spotted dolphins that had plenty of babies with them. After a bit of time with them we went to the eastern end of the island where our lookout had seen some sperm whales. We never did find them sperm whales, but we did find a group of pilot whales. It was a large group that was feeding as they were constantly going down and staying under for some time. When they were at the surface they were calm and sometimes curious so we got to see them well. The last surprise of the day was two bottlenose dolphins, a mother and calf, that were together with the pilot whales.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;
