They are all divided in five different families:<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Delphinidae (Oceanic dolphins)<\/li>\n<li>Platanistidae (Indus and Ganges river dolphins)<\/li>\n<li>Iniidae (Amazon river dolphins)<\/li>\n<li>Pontoporiidae (La Plata river dolphins)<\/li>\n<li>Lipotidae (Baiji or Chinese river dolphins)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table class=\"tr-caption-container\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" href=\"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/1-8.jpg\"><img src=\"https:\/\/whalewatchingazores.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/1-8.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"524\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"810\" data-original-width=\"987\"><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"tr-caption\" style=\"text-align: center;\">36 (out of the 38) most known species of dolphins.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<div>In the Azores archipelago <strong>11 different species<\/strong>&nbsp;of dolphins have already been recorded. When divers ascend too quickly from deep waters, dissolved nitrogen in the blood forms bubbles which can cause acute pain in the muscles, paralysis, and in some cases even death. It&#8217;s a very big risk for deep water human divers as well as other diving species. But not for dolphins!!<\/div>\n<div>When diving, dolphins reduce its request for oxygen. Their heart beats go slower and the amount of blood pumped around the body decreases&nbsp;(Cozzi et al., 2017). During a deep dive only important organs such as the heart and the brain get oxygen rich blood flowing through them. There has been evidence that they can select the heart rate, and basically the volume of blood per minute that is pumped out from the heart (Cotten et al, 2008).<\/div>\n<div>The marine mammals\u2019 lung architecture shows two pulmonary regions: one air-filled and the other collapsed. The researchers believe that blood flows mainly through the collapsed region of the lungs, so dolphins are able to control gas exchange between their lungs and blood to manipulate the amount of nitrogen that enters their bloodstream to avoid decompression problems (Cotten et al, 2008).<\/div>\n<div>We are involuntary breathers; we continue to breathe even if we\u2019re unconscious. But dolphins are voluntary breathers; they must make a conscious decision to inhale air. This means that dolphins never truly sleep because their brain must always be active enough to initiate breathing.<\/div>\n<div>So let&#8217;s go to see how dolphins rest&#8230;<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"how-dolphins-sleep-rest\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">How Dolphins sleep\/rest?<\/span><\/h3>\n<div>Some of our guests in our trips ask us whether dolphins sleep. As mentioned before dolphins need to be &#8220;awake&#8221; to breathe, because it is a voluntary move. The brain waves of captive dolphins (<em>Tursiops truncatus<\/em>) that are sleeping show that one side of the dolphin&#8217;s brain is &#8220;awake&#8221; while the other is in a deep sleep, called slow-wave sleep. This is called unihemispheric sleep&nbsp;(Mukhametov et al., 1997; Oleksenko et al., 2002).
