This cetacean hotspot in the middle of the north Atlantic ocean attracts a huge diversity of whale and dolphin species, and this year was definitely a diverse year. Across the seasons this year we encountered a total of 16 different species!<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nAs is expected the 3 most encountered species throughout the year were 3 of our resident species: the <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/common-dolphin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">common dolphin<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/bottlenose-dolphin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bottlenose dolphin<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/sperm-whale.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sperm whale<\/a>. Next in line was the <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/fin-whale.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fin whale<\/a>, one of the spring time migratory whales that appears to be on the increase in the Azores in recent years. Our sightings graph below summarises the sighting frequencies of all species throughout the year. The best part is that this year during all our tours we had a 100% success rate. That means that during every tour at least one species of whale or dolphin was encountered!&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nOur list of other species we spotted this year includes many <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/06\/caretta-caretta-loggerhead-turtle.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">loggerhead turtles<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/dermochelys-coriacea-leatherback-turtle.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">leatherback turtles<\/a> (2015 was a record year for leatherbacks!), <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/sunfish-fact-sheet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sunfish<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/devil-ray-fact-sheet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">devil rays<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/hammerhead-shark-fact-sheet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hammerhead sharks<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/08\/blue-shark-fact-sheet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blue sharks<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2016\/03\/tuna-general-fact-sheet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tuna<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/08\/spearfish-fact-sheet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">spearfish<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/08\/blue-marlin-fact-sheet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">marlin<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/flying-fish-fact-sheet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">flying fish<\/a>, flying squid&#8230;and last but not least an extensive list of seabirds, with the <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/corys-shearwater-fact-sheet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cory&#8217;s shearwater<\/a> being the most encountered one.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; 38.9%<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/fin-whale.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fin whale (<i>Balaenoptera physalus<\/i>)<\/a> &#8211; 27.4%<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/atlantic-spotted-dolphin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Atlantic spotted dolphin (<i>Stenella frontalis<\/i>)<\/a> &#8211; 0.8%&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/cuviers-beaked-whale.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cuvier&#8217;s beaked whale (<i>Ziphius carvirostris<\/i>)<\/a> &#8211; 0.4%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<br \/>\nKeep in mind that the above numbers have been grouped together for the whole year and we observe fluctuations in sighting frequencies across the months. For example the chance of seeing one of the great baleen whales (<a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/01\/blue-whale.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blue whale<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/fin-whale.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fin whale<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/sei-whale.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sei whale<\/a>) is very high in the spring and virtually zero other times of the year, and <a href=\"http:\/\/azoreswhales.blogspot.pt\/2007\/07\/sperm-whale.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sperm whale<\/a> are seen more often in the summer than the rest of the year. The best time of the year to do a tour in the Azores depends on what you want to see.
