With amazing weather conditions and lots of positive energy, we left the harbour early this morning. Sun was shining, and we were ready to find out what will nature had to offer us today.
We like to tell our clients how challenging it is sometimes this job, and we pray for their patience in case whales and dolphins are a bit shy that day.
Today was barely necessary to talk about that; an incredibly social group of common dolphins showed up a few minutes after we started our journey! Calves and juveniles were seen swimming surrounded by their older members of the group, as the reproductive season is taking place at this time of the year.
After enjoying their always pleasant presence for a while, we headed out to the area our lookouts were guiding us to. And boom! Two female sperm whales were calmy resting on the surface, quite spread out from each other. One of these sperm whales was recorded before in 2018, as a juvenile, and in 2019. It has now grown to become a subadult, and the recurrent sighting of this individual makes us suspect that it may be a permanent member of the group. Funny thing: this whale has only been encountered with white unit members! We still do not have a name for this individual so if you have the name this whale deserves, go to our Instagram account, and let us know! These two sperm whales went to the deeps to catch their lunch of today and said goodbye to us by showing their fluke. We were done in that area!
In our next stop a couple of sei whales were sighted! These baleen whales are the third biggest animals of the world. They are now on their way to the northern waters after spending some months in the tropical, warm waters. The Azores Islands are a good place for them to stop, not only because we are halfway through their journey, but because these waters are full of nutrients, especially at this time of the year.
Before heading back to Ponta Delgada, a small group of bottlenose dolphins was seen from the distance. After some time enjoying the good sights of these dolphins swimming and socializing with each other, we decided to start our journey back as it was getting late. Time flies in these trips!
If you want to have a good time enjoying these awesome creatures in a respectful way, book your ticket and come with us! Weather conditions seem to be good this week, are you going to miss it?
